About

The project is centered around the Great Barrier Reef, the largest coral reef system in the world. With its impressive biodiversity and economic significance, the reef is under grave threat, with estimates suggesting its complete extinction by 2050. Overharvesting, pollution, ocean acidification, and habitat destruction are the main culprits. To combat these challenges, I delved into preservation practices, examining both indigenous and western approaches.

Building upon these practices, I embarked on a world-building exercise, envisioning an indigenous futuristic world in which technology and sustainable traditions merge to save the Great Barrier Reef. Through a cinematic sequence, I portrayed the current state of the reef, emphasizing the impact of human pollution and the pressing need for change.

In my final project, I sought to tell the story of the Great Barrier Reef's near collapse in 2050 from the reef's perspective. Set in the year 2100, in an indigenous futuristic world, the project serves as a historical bedtime story, highlighting the reef's struggle and the traditional owners' successful preservation efforts. The film explores themes such as the reciprocal relationship between coral reef coastline protection and destructive building practices, the cultural connection between the reef and indigenous identity, sustainable indigenous fishing practices, controlled burning, and the harmony of artificial and natural reef technology.

Throughout the entire project, each visualization offers a unique perspective and targets diverse audiences. By blending indigenous knowledge and western science, the Coral Cosmos project aims to inspire change and foster a deeper understanding of our responsibility to protect and preserve coral reefs.
